Female Director Shawn Pendergast Wins HockeyNL Award
Monday Jun 14, 2021
Congratulations to SJMHA’s Female Director Shawn Pendergast for winning the Hockey NL Female Hockey Promotion Award for 2021. This award was established in 1991 to recognize an individual who has actively participated in the promotion of female hockey.
Shawn has been involved in minor hockey for many years having played various roles as a volunteer with the Minor and Female programs within St. John’s Minor Hockey Association. Shawn has been the Caps Female Director since 2016. He is committed to growing the Female game as can be seen by the growth of Female Hockey in our association.
Shawn has a passion for promoting females in sport and is always looking for new ways to get more girls involved in the game of hockey. For the past 2 years Shawn has been instrumental in organizing both the First Shift Program and the Esso Fun Days to promote the growth of female hockey on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula. Just this past month, Shawn, along with other volunteers, operated an all-female First Shift program with 60 new female players. Shawn recognizes the importance of our grass roots programming and is dedicated to instilling a love of the game in these new players through these events.
Shawn also recognizes the importance of retention in Female Hockey and was a lead organizer in the Growth and Retention Committee within St. John’s Minor Hockey. It is because of his determination and commitment that he is held in such high regard within our association and the other associations in the Metro region as a whole.
Congratulations Shawn, and please continue with the great work!
