RESTART UPDATED March 26

Friday Mar 26, 2021

This evening we were advised we had to change some of our plans for the restart of our hockey program. These changes are in all capital letters:

With the return to Alert Level 2 this weekend, the minor hockey program will restart on Saturday morning, March 27, weather permitting. The direction provided by Public Health with respect to minor sport states:

“Team sports can resume in Alert Level 2. Teams will be permitted to offer individual athlete skill development and team practice or training sessions, which could include intra-squad competition. To return to inter-squad competition, each provincial sport association or other sport provider, including private, recreational and community-based sport providers, should submit a return to sport plan to Sport NL or the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation. Tournaments are not allowed.”

While as a province the number of COVID cases are very low right now, we must all recognise that the new variants are far more contagious, and as a result extra diligence is required. We all saw how in February we went from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 5 in just a couple of days.

Families are reminded to follow good public health practices, including hand washing and mask wearing. PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO ATTEND ON ICE SESSIONS IN THE U6, U7 AND U9 DIVISIONS. IN THOSE DIVISIONS PARENTS ARE REMINDED TO maintain at least 6 feet of physical space between yourself and other people at all times.

Players must arrive at the rink fully dressed, and can remove skate guard or replace their boots with their skates before entering the ice. Dressing rooms may or may not be open. If they are open spend as little time as possible in the dressing room. Masks must continue to be worn until players and coaches enter the ice surface. COACHES MUST CONTINUE TO WEAR THEIR NON-MEDICAL MASK WHILE PARTICIPATING IN PRACTICE SESSIONS. Parents and guardians must wear masks at all times while in the rink.

Entrance doors to the rink will be unlocked 10 minutes before the scheduled start of each on ice session, and will remain unlocked until the scheduled start time. At all other times the entrance door will remain locked. Also, the door between the 2 rinks will remain locked at all times. Please do not arrive early and enter the rink when other teams may still be present.

If you see anything that you feel is not as safe as it could be, please do not hesitate to bring it to Coach Wally’s attention, or pass the information along to Jodi in the office.

Further information is expected from Sport NL and Hockey NL over the next few days. Therefore it is highly likely that additional restrictions might be needed as we move forward. Before we can return to games against teams from other associations Hockey NL will have to submit a plan to Sport NL for their approval. This may take another couple of days to resolve. So for now, we will schedule practice sessions for our all-star teams while the future of inter-association play is determined.

We must all feel very lucky to be back in the rink. Please let us do our best to ensure the safety of ourselves, our children and all others you meet at the rink.
