SJMHA Message to our Membership
Friday Aug 21, 2020
In March Hockey Canada terminated the 2019/2020 hockey season without any notice. The local hockey community, and the rest of Canada, has been dealing with the COVID pandemic ever since. Since March much work has gone on behind the scenes throughout Newfoundland & Labrador to ensure we are ready to Return to Hockey this fall.
The SJMHA Board of Directors has formed a Return to Hockey subcommittee that is working on our own plan to return to hockey safely in accordance with the Hockey NL and Hockey Canada guidelines. In addition, the Provincial Government has established Sport Guidance that must be followed. Most of us have been already participating in outdoor sports like baseball and soccer. Moving indoors for the fall and winter presents some new challenges to work through.
Every minor hockey association across Newfoundland & Labrador must prepare its own Return to Hockey plan to ensure the safety of its members. Our Return to Hockey plan will be submitted to Hockey NL for review soon. Once approved, our plan will be the basis of our 2020/2021 season plan, from which we will be able to describe the changes to our hockey program and the registration fees that will apply.
Here is an update for our membership regarding the upcoming hockey season:
Registration - Details are not yet finalized. This year’s hockey program will be significantly different from previous years. Once our Return to Hockey plan is approved and all details are finalized, we will communicate with our members on the changes, and the cost associated with the new program. Once again this year we will be doing online registration through the website.
Registration Credits - When the 2019/2020 season came to an abrupt end, there was almost a month of hockey remaining. Depending upon the hockey program (house league, female, all-star and developmental teams) the amount of ice time remaining varied. As a result different credits will apply for each hockey program. These credits will be available to returning players when they register for the upcoming hockey season. We will provide more information on the amounts associated with these registration credits in the coming weeks.
Money Fundraised by Teams – In March some all-star and developmental teams accounts were left with money raised for team travel to mainland and provincial tournaments. This included sponsorship, donations, team fundraising and lottery license proceeds. We are determining, with assistance from the Consumer Affairs Division of Service NL, how to best deal with lottery license proceeds held in team accounts. This will influence the amount of each team credit. We expect further details will be available soon.
SJMHA Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place during late October or early November. We are exploring options for both an in person and web based meeting. We will likely require members to preregister to ensure we can accommodate everyone either by appropriate physical distancing or sufficient web access. Further details on our AGM will be released soon. At the AGM a number of Board positions are up for election. These include the President, Treasurer, Director-Atom/Peewee, Director-Bantam/Midget and Director Novice. When the date of the AGM is finalized, notice will be provided and a call for nominations made.
SJMHA Office is planned to open in September. Our office at Twin Rinks may not be open to walk in service like normal. Appointments will likely be required and Jodi will have to accompany you from the building entrance to the office. Masks will be required. When the office opens we will provide additional details.
Jersey and Equipment Return – We are planning an all-star jersey and other equipment return for early September. Further details will be available soon.
New Division Names – Starting with the 2020/2021 hockey season Hockey Canada has changed the names of the various divisions of hockey. Gone are the familiar Squirt, Novice, Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget division names. The new names are Under 7, Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 18.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. As information becomes available we will be updating the website accordingly. While this season will be different from anything we have experienced before, as long as we all maintain a positive attitude, we will provide the children with a fun hockey experience.
