REORGANIZATION OF SJMHA ANNOUNCED AT AGM
Friday Jun 30, 2017
The Board of Directors of the St. John’s Minor Hockey Association are excited to announce a reorganization of our hockey program effective September 2017.
In May long time administrator Gerry Gulliver retired from his position with SJMHA. Gerry’s retirement created the opportunity for the Board to re-examine the way we staff the association and how we deliver the hockey program. It was recognized early on that the Board wanted to increase our focus on the development of our young hockey players.
In September the administrator’s position will be reorganized into a half-time office administrator position that focuses on the business administration side of our association. The duties will focus on financial matters and member services. This position will be advertised and filled over the summer months with the position filled prior to registration in September.
Long-time Technical Director Wally Bray will have his role expanded to a fulltime position to increase his contact hours with all divisions of hockey, encompassing all-star and house league teams. Coach Wally will be joined by Cy Dymond and Cyril Morrissey as Assistant Technical Directors to assist with the delivery of the hockey program. SJMHA is very fortunate to have these three High Performance certified coaches working with our players.
Wally, Cy and Cyril have been with us for a long time, so what will be different in the future?
As the fulltime Technical Director Coach Wally will be able to spend more time planning the hockey program with the various divisions and teams. In addition to having the Technical Directors working with coaches on the ice in practices, the Technical Directors will also attend hockey games and provide feedback to coaches following games. Occasionally the Technical Directors will assist coaches on the bench during games. In the past this level of support was only routinely provided to our younger house league divisions and offered to all-star coaches at their discretion. Under the new delivery model the Technical Directors will routinely provide this level of support to all-star teams. Considerable effort will be spend on training our coaches and enhancing the development of our hockey players.
Another exciting development associated with the reorganization is the addition of three new optional programmes. Starting in September, prior to the start of the regular hockey season, SJMHA will operate a series of pre-season camps. These pre-season camps are intended to prepare players for the start of the all-star and house league programs, and are intended to support those players who did not play summer hockey. Throughout the regular hockey season SJMHA will offer power skating and skill sessions to those players interested in improving their game. Then finally, at the end of the regular hockey season in years when Easter comes early, SJMHA will offer an optional Spring League hockey program.
In early August returning players will receive their usual registration package in the mail. Information on how to register for the optional programs will be included in that mail out.
We hope the membership are as excited as we are about the changes we are proposing to the hockey program.
