League Structure

As a member of Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador and Hockey Canada, SJMHA offers its minor hockey programme in the following divisional structure:

Initiation Programme

Initiation Programme is designed for boys and girls ages seven and under who are beginning their minor hockey experience. This is a one hour a week "learn to skate" programme. Participants will be divided into groups based upon their skill level and will receive individual support as they become comfortable on the ice.

Squirt

Squirt division is designed for boys and girls aged six and seven who are playing in their first games of organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of a one hour practice and a one hour game. Games are played on half ice to allow the weaker skaters to participate fully.

Novice

Novice division is designed for boys and girls aged seven and eight who have little experience in playing organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of one game and one practice session. Games are played on full ice to allow the players to improve their skating ability on the larger ice surface. Novice hockey will be divided into two divisions based upon age and skill if numbers permit.

Atom

Atom division is designed for boys and girls aged nine and ten who have little experience in playing organized ice hockey. The house league programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of one game and one practice session. The all-star programme is based upon two games per week played with three 10 minute stop time periods. The all-star teams play in the Tri-Com league with club teams representing the other local associations.

Peewee

Peewee division is designed for boys and girls aged eleven and twelve who have some experience in playing organized ice hockey. The house league programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of one game and one practice session. The all-star programme is based upon two games per week played with three 10 minute stop time periods. The all-star teams play in the Tri-Com league with teams representing the other associations.

Bantam

Bantam division is designed for boys and girls aged thirteen and fourteen who are experienced in playing organized ice hockey. The house league programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of mostly games with the occasional practice session. The all-star programme is based upon two games per week played with three 15 minute stop time periods. The all-star teams play in the Tri-Com league with teams representing the other associations.

Midget

Midget division is designed for boys and girls aged fifteen to seventeen who are experienced in playing organized ice hockey. The house league programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of only games. There is no Tri-Com all-star programme in Midget hockey. Elite midget players are eligible to play in the Provincial Major Midget League, or to play Midget AAA/AA hockey in the Doug Marshall Hockey league.

Juvenile

Juvenile division is designed for boys and girls aged seventeen to nineteen who are experienced in playing organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon one games every week. The division will be operated during seasons when numbers warrant.

Female Under 12

The Female Under 12 division is designed for girls aged nine to eleven who have some experience in playing organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of a one hour practice and a one hour game. Currently this division is hosted by Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association with teams comprised of players pooled from all local minor hockey associations. The division operates under the direction of the Metro Female Hockey League. Games are played using the rules established for female hockey.

Female Under 15

The Female Under 15 division is designed for girls aged twelve to fourteen who have some experience in playing organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of a one hour practice and a one hour game. Currently this division is hosted by St. John’s Minor Hockey Association with teams comprised of players pooled from all local minor hockey associations. The division operates under the direction of the Metro Female Hockey League. Games are played using the rules established for female hockey.

Female Under 20

The Female Under 20 division is designed for girls aged fifteen to nineteen who have experience with organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon one practice and two games per week. The league operates with association based teams from the various local minor hockey association and teams from the Whitbourne and Harbour Grace areas during seasons when numbers warrant. The division operates under the direction of the Metro Female Hockey League. Games are played using the rules established for female hockey.
